To improve patient engagement and experience, one of Southeastern Texas' largest healthcare providers sought to create a new, modern patient portal. This new portal would utilize single sign-on (SSO) to make all of the tasks that patients require —from retrieving lab results to scheduling appointments— dramatically easier.
The Element Blue team built this patient portal using Sitecore’s Enterprise Experience Management platform. With its rich capabilities in personalization, marketing campaigns and advanced analytics, Sitecore was a natural fit for the demands of the project and provided enterprise content management capability, portions of the patient portal user interface, and the entirety of the healthcare system’s public facing web presence. Additionally, we integrated the portal with the organization’s existing Cerner EMR system for functions such as bill pay.
A key component of the portal design was enabling patients to find the right specialists and book appointments online. This required robust and highly configurable search abilities. We utilized Solr to provide Physician and Location Search capability within the portal. Future plans call for expanding Solr to provide additional enterprise search capabilities .
The new patient portal has proven to be a tremendous success. As a result, user sessions have increased by 40% and patients now have the ability to access a single source for physician search, scheduling, bill pay, and messaging. All of this adds up to healthier, happier patients.
